Over the course of his employment at Hogwarts, Dobby became close friends with Aberforth Dumbledore and spent much time at Aberforth's home in Hogsmeade. Aberforth seemed to have a close attachment to Dobby, since he felt very sorry when he learned he died. At Christmas, Hermione always made clothes as gifts for all hard-working house elves at Hogwarts and she thought everyone loved them. In reality, Dobby confided to Harry that the he took all those gifts himself, as no elf dares to accept clothes, which are an insult for them and the symbol of unemployment.

Originating in the southern areas, one specific legend about farfadets is that they were "wrinkled, brown-skinned midgets who went around either naked or wearing dirty rags", a description that is almost identical to Rowling's elves. The Farfadets would help around a farming home, completing tasks not done in the day by the human servants. The majority of the wizarding world don’t want to pay for the services of an elf when they can get it for nothing.
This led wizards such as Albus Dumbledore and Hermione Granger to personally work to improve the lives of these creatures. Willed to be absolutely obedient to every word and command, a house-elf's only escape would be freedom via the gift of clothes by their master. Dobby, the house-elf belonging to the Malfoys, demonstrated that, in some circumstances, a house-elf could resist the bond to their master, but it would cause them great physical and emotional pain. He had a few – let’s call it ‘curious’ – judgement issues (like that time he sent a jinxed Bludger after Harry during a Quidditch match), but he always meant well. Dobby initially served the Malfoy family but was set free when Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving him a sock. ’Dobby has no master… Dobby is a free elf,’ he told Bellatrix, shortly before his demise in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Not only was he risking his life by answering Harry’s pleas for help, he was returning to a place where he had been enslaved, to face the family that were cruel to him for many years. It just goes to show that Dobby really would do anything to help Harry. Of all of the places Harry could have been, he was in Dobby’s old home. In the same (pre-"Deathly Hallows" film) chat with MTV News, Toby Jones opened up about how, following his debut in "The Chamber of Secrets," Potterheads continued to ask him when Dobby would return to the big-screen franchise. Luckily, "Harry Potter" fans got their wish with "Deathly Hallows – Part 1," which features Jones returning as the character after eight long years. However, Kreacher later started to respect Harry and be less prejudiced in general. It is possible that, since Kreacher had contact with the Hogwarts kitchen house-elves, he had contact with Dobby, too, and their common ground caused a release of the bad blood, but it is unknown. Dobby might not have learned about Kreacher's change before he was killed in 1998. Kreacher looked like Dobby in appearance, but was angry and antagonistic in character. On Harry's orders, Dobby, along with Kreacher, formerly the House of Black's house-elf who now belonged to Harry, tailed Draco Malfoy and helped Harry learn that Draco was using the Room of Requirement.
A veritable legion of house-elves were enlisted by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to help out the entire school instead of serving one master. They also presumably moved trunks and baggage to and from rooms, cleaned dormitories, and presumably other areas of the castle as well. House-elves had always been subjected to work with wizards who they treated as their 'masters', and the way they were treated and how they behaved were subject to the laws of their country's wizarding government, known as Elf Legislation. Not only that, he was unintentionally insensitive to the wishes and feelings of Harry, who loved Hogwarts and his friends, and Dobby was essentially trying to cut Harry off from the things in his life that gave him real joy and purpose. He had large, tennis-ball-like green eyes,[4] a pencil-like nose and long,[27] bat-like pointed ears[4] and brown skin.[5] Before he was given freedom, he wore a body-covering pillowcase.

As Aberforth was an old and grumpy person, he didn't have a good relationship with many people. He also permitted Dobby to call him as he wanted (such as "a barmy old codger").
